To (Winter) Market to Market at Horsefeathers

29 Oct

Winter may be just around the corner but it doesn’t mean farm fresh produce can’t find its way to Western New Yorkers. Fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, wine, biscotti, cookies, homemade dog treats, jams, soaps, chocolates, pasta and more will be available starting this weekend at Horsefeathers indoor Winter Market.

PotatoesThe Winter Market at Horsefeathers will return for its second full season from 9 am to 1 pm Saturday, Nov. 2., occupying portions of the first floor and lower level of the Horsefeathers Market & Residences, 346 Connecticut St. on Buffalo’s West Side. From 10:15 am to noon, patrons can shop to the tunes of the duet Porcelain Train.

Up to 20 vendors will be offering farm fresh produce, hand crafted products, and more. Guests of the market can also become better acquainted with the establishment’s permanent businesses, including The Pasta Peddler, Blackbird Sweets, Jolie’s Traditional Chinese, Chow Chocolat and Martin Cooks restaurant.

The Frizlen Group Architects of Buffalo renovated the historic 19th century Horsefeathers Building. Twenty-four loft-style apartments occupy the building’s top four floors.

The Winter Market will be in operation until May 3, 2014.

Eat My Shortbread

I’m not always crazy about overwhelming amounts of chocolate in my desserts, but these decadent, chewy little treats are a serious exception to the rule — they are not too much, just the right amount of chocolates goodness and a perfect compliment to anything from a glass of milk to a bowl of ice cream!

You will need:

1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350. In large bowl, beat butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until light and fluffy. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt; stir into the butter mixture until well blended. Mix in the chocolate chips. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets & bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or just until set…

Niagara Wine Trail USA: Blog

IMG_0344Niagara County, NY – The 2014 event schedule for the Niagara Wine Trail, USA is now posted on the trail’s website. Tickets for the 2014 events will be on sale in the coming month.

The latest change the trail has made for next year is to the very popular April “Taste of the Trail” wine and food pairing event, which is now two weekends. “We want to give our customers the opportunity to experience all of our 19 member wineries,” says trail Coordinator, Elizabeth Maute. “Based on the feedback we get from surveys taken after each event, many participants only have time to make it to about half of the wineries they want to during an event weekend. Our Holiday Happening event is two weekends, and is successful, so we wanted to try something similar with the April event this year. Our trail is growing, and so are our…

Here’s my November column for Curves Fitness magazine. It’s a big, warm meal in a bowl, full of cannellini beans, escarole, shrimp, capers, garlic, oregano, all great Italian flavors. And it’s only 400 calories a serving.  Can’t beat that. I hope you enjoy it.
